STEAM Inventors Wins Regional FLL Championship!

The gymnasium erupted in cheers. Six students from STEAM Inventors stood frozen for a moment, processing what had just happened. Then came the hugs, the tears, and the realization: they had just won first place at the FIRST LEGO League Regional Championship.
For our small robotics team from Columbus, Georgia, this wasn't just a trophy—it was validation of months of hard work, countless debugging sessions, and a belief that kids from our community could compete with anyone.
FROM BEGINNERS TO CHAMPIONS IN TWO SEASONS
Just two years ago, most of our team members had never programmed a robot. They'd never heard of FIRST LEGO League. They certainly never imagined they'd be standing on a winner's podium.
"When we started, I didn't even know what Python was," recalls Jake, age 12, one of our team veterans. "Now I can make a robot do exactly what I want it to do. It's like having a superpower."
What is FIRST LEGO League?
FLL is a global robotics competition for ages 9-14 where teams design autonomous robots to complete missions, develop innovative solutions to real-world problems, and demonstrate core values like teamwork and gracious professionalism. Over 679,000 students in 110 countries participate each year.
THE ROAD TO REGIONALS
Our journey began in Fall 2023 when STEAM Inventors formed its first FLL team. The learning curve was steep. Students had to master LEGO Spike Prime hardware, learn block-based coding (eventually transitioning to Python), and understand engineering principles—all while working together as a team.
That first season, we made it to State. We didn't win, but we learned something more valuable: what championship-level robotics looks like. Our students came home inspired, not defeated.
THIS SEASON: EVERYTHING CLICKED
When the 2024-25 FLL season launched, our returning students were ready. They'd spent the summer refining their programming skills, studying robot design, and—most importantly—learning how to work together under pressure.
"The biggest change wasn't technical," explains Imon, our 11-year-old team captain. "It was how we communicated. Last year, we'd argue when things went wrong. This year, we learned to stay calm and solve problems together."
"When our robot completed its final mission run, I looked at my teammates and we all just knew. We'd done everything we could. The rest was up to the judges."
— ImonThe Three Parts of FLL
FLL isn't just about robots. Teams are judged on three components:
1. Robot Game: Our autonomous robot completed missions on the game table, earning over 250 points—one of the highest scores of the day.
2. Innovation Project: Teams research a real-world problem and present an innovative solution. Our students impressed judges with their research methodology and creative thinking.
3. Core Values: FLL emphasizes teamwork, discovery, and gracious professionalism. This is where our team truly shined, demonstrating the collaborative spirit we've been building all season.
WHAT'S NEXT: SUPER-REGIONALS
Winning Regionals means we've earned a spot at Super-Regionals, where the best teams from multiple regions compete for advancement to the State Championship.
Our students aren't resting. They're already analyzing their robot's performance, identifying areas for improvement, and preparing their Innovation Project presentation for tougher judges.
🎯 Next Goal: Super-Regional Championship
We're now preparing for the next level of competition, where we'll face the best teams from across multiple regions. Follow our journey on social media as we work toward the State Championship!
MORE THAN TROPHIES
Yes, we're proud of the championship. But what makes us most proud are the transformations we've witnessed in our students.
Public speaking is one of the most unexpected skills our students develop. Kids who once dreaded raising their hand in class now confidently present complex projects to panels of judges. As one student put it: 'I was nervous, but I knew my stuff. That made all the difference.
These skills—coding, engineering, teamwork, communication, problem-solving—will serve our students long after they've aged out of FLL. That's the real victory.
THANK YOU, COLUMBUS
None of this would be possible without the support of our Columbus community—the parents who drove to practices, the local businesses that sponsored equipment, and everyone who believed that kids from our city could achieve something remarkable.
From the bottom of our hearts: thank you. This trophy belongs to all of us.
